Burma: Why The Silence?
May 08, 2008

Aid flights are arriving in Burma to help the survivors of the cyclone.

I've been surprised by how little comment there has been so far on the story. There are very few emails and texts on the subject and not many comments added to the story or blogs.

So does your lack of comment equate to a lack of concern? Is it down to:

:: Burma's military junta (the attitude of the nation's rulers means you feel sorry for the people but not the country)?

:: Concerns over whether the money donated will get through to the people in need (based on previous disasters)?

:: Fatigue (there are so many demands for money for good causes)?

I'd be interested to have your comments on why you don't want to comment!

Pete's Problems
May 06, 2008

The release from prison of singer Pete Doherty has led to the inevitable chorus of criticism.

The recurring theme of some of your comments is: "Oh no, not more showbiz stories. We don't care."

But take a moment to look at the story more closely.

Has the Babyshambles singer received any different treatment to other prisoners in the same position?

Is the fact that he is a celebrity (or should that be "so-called celebrity"?) a factor?

Is prison the best way to treat drug offenders, albeit his time behind bars was for breaching his probation?

Now, what started as a straight showbiz story takes on more of a social and public policy dimension.

And judging by your comments so far, these are issues which you care about.

The McCanns: One Year On
May 03, 2008

There's never been a story like it.

The disappearance of Madeleine McCann a year ago produced a huge number of comments.

I posted a blog about it after she had been missing for only a few days to explain why we were devoting air-time to the story.

Various other posts on this and other blogs have also led to a big debate.

And our interview with Kate and Gerry McCann, one year on, has provoked a wide range of opinions which are just as strong as they were 12 months ago.

We put some of your questions to Madeleine's parents during the interview.

I am constantly trying to promote interactivity within Sky News and I believe you have a part to play in the news coverage.

The fact remains that Madeleine is still missing, her fate unknown.

Mayoral Debate
April 28, 2008

Thanks for all the emails, texts and blog comments with questions or reaction to the Mayoral debate on Sky News.

We aired as many as we could. This is interactivity in action and something we are keen to pursue.

Although the debate involved candidates from the three main parties, we have provided full details of all those standing for London Mayor.

And don't forget our test of the candidates' policies so you can find out whose views match your own opinions on the key issues.

Viewer Video
April 22, 2008

As you may have heard, Sky News has won a coveted Bafta television award for News Coverage.

Head of Sky News John Ryley said: "It's the third Bafta we've won. It's yet again confirmation that Sky News is absolutely the first place to come to for breaking news and it's a tremendous tribute to everybody who works at the organisation."

Part of the award-winning entry for the attack on Glasgow Airport last June was the use of viewer video.

We welcome the contribution which viewers make to our output. As I've said before, you are the "eyes and ears" of the newsroom.

Tip-offs on news stories can be emailed to news@sky.com or texted to 84501.

Still pictures and videos (including mobile phone video) can be sent to the same address.

There are also picture galleries on the Your Photos section of the website and other videos can be submitted through SkyCast.

Thank you to everyone who has sent material to us - keep it coming.

Stories From Inside Zimbabwe
April 06, 2008

Thank you very much to everyone who has contacted us over the last week or so with stories from inside Zimbabwe.

We have featured many of them on air and on our website.

Please keep sending them in, either by posting on this blog or by email to news@sky.com

Inside Zimbabwe
April 02, 2008

The delay in announcing the results of the elections in Zimbabwe has brought all sorts of rumours and speculation.

The fact that yesterday was April Fool's Day didn't help!

But we are trying to sort the fact from the fiction and our correspondent Emma Hurd is now inside Zimbabwe.

We have already had a lot of emails from viewers in the country with their accounts of what is happening on the streets. And we would welcome any more.

Canadian Seal Hunt
March 25, 2008

Seal_cub

There are certain stories which are guaranteed to provoke a strong viewer reaction.

And I know from past experience that stories about animals fall into that category.

See for example the posts (and comments) about China's Zoos and the Dolphin Slaughter in Japan.

The reports from our correspondent Ian Woods about the seal hunt in Canada are already leading to a good debate. And Ian has written about his personal feelings on the story.

Whatever The Weather
March 10, 2008

It's been one of those days when the weather has been the news.

Your photos and stories have helped once again to give us a picture of what's been happening.

But it's also one of those days when I wonder whether we've been too focused on southern England.

Sky's senior weather presenter Francis Wilson says: "The forecasters got it right on this occasion. We said southern coastal counties would be hit by storm-force winds - and that is what has happened. There has been structural damage and trees down.

"But most of Britain has escaped the violent winds and so, for most of Britain and Ireland, it has been over-played."

So I can understand those of you who are sending us pictures of sunny scenes.

House Rules
February 28, 2008

Newschannelblog2 Each of our blogs contains a set of House Rules.

These - along with our moderation policy - help to ensure a constructive debate in response to the various posts made on the blogs.

Your responses to my posts have been helpful in providing us with feedback.

But it makes it more difficult for other users when people go "off-topic" or engage in a separate debate.

I have been alerted to lots of questions left on the thoughtful Editors' Blog post about the spate of suicides in Bridgend.

Similar questions have been left on other blog posts.

I have answered the point before and nothing has changed.

Sky News is always reviewing its graphics and we are always looking to improve our brand identity.

I know there is a lot of speculation but I can't tell you anything more.
