The report from our Asia correspondent Peter Sharp on live animals being fed to tigers at a zoo in China has provoked a lot of debate.
Viewers have suggested a boycott of Chinese goods and have urged the International Olympic Committee to reconsider the award of the 2008 games to Beijing.
We realise that some of you will find the pictures disturbing.
The report has been edited to remove some of the more horrific pictures while still retaining enough of the material to show what happened.
Every time the report has been shown, we have issued a warning about its content.
Peter has written more about his visit to the zoo in our Frontline blog which you can read by clicking here.

Thank you so much for showing us those horrendous pictures with full sound of the dreadful cruelty perpetrated on all animals in China. I have today cancelled my proposed Olympic visit. I was also planning a possible visit to China next year on a garden tour – that is also cancelled. Friends who visited China tell me that dogs are partially boiled alive and then skinned and chopped up (alive) – the agony is supposed to tenderise and flavour the meat. The only way to stop this torture is for news services like yours to bring it to the attention of the public. Boycott China and it will hit them in their tourist pockets. Well done Sky.

The story regarding animal abuse in China is horrific and a sad indictment on the human race as a whole.
Yet again, man is seen to be causing horrendous suffering to animals but one thing people need to bear in mind is that the same kind of suffering is happening day in, day out on a global scale to create burgers, sausages, steaks etc.
People all too often have selective morals where this is concerned - animals aren't treated much better when bred to be slaughtered to then be put onto our plates.
There's no real differentiation between what happened in your report and what goes on in the meat industry worldwide.

I have just watched the animal abuse in China which you have filmed. Please, please, please try to give this wider coverage and pass it on to the other TV stations worldwide. This is abssolutely barbaric and the people who support this should be given to the animals, both zoo keepers and the paying public. This really does need more action and quickly.

I have just watched the report on the tigers in China. It's sick, barbaric and wrong. I can't believe animals are treated like this and whats more, people pay for this so called entertainment. Watching them laugh made me feel sick and angry. It has to be stopped. The Chinese appear to have no respect for animals.
Thank you for highlighting the issue.

I have just watched the animals being fed to the tigers. It just shows you how barbaric this country is compared to the west.

The next time Europeans are about to buy Chinese goods they should remember the disgusting images from the Chinese zoo. Stop buying there goods and the zoo will soon be closed by their government.

Dear Ian,
This report was looked at very carefully before being broadcast. We are aware of the issues involved which is why warnings were given before and during transmission. Many people on this blog have thanked us for showing the report and highlighting the issue.

There must be an international law that should protect all animals. Would the crowds still be loving the kill if a human was dropped in on the tigers........it's a very good idea to boycott the Olympics.

Dear Paul
I have just watched your news item on the animal cruelty in China and found the footage shown quite sickening, I think Sky should have waited
until after the watershed to show these graphic images. I am sure any small child would be deeply disturbed if they saw this sickening video.

I'm not sure if I've e-mailed the right address to voice my disgust and outrage on this news. I watched it in my lunch break and returned to work quite upset. Please understand that I am not upset at Sky News for showing this, I support you 100% for making people aware of the plight of these poor animals. The people of China need to be educated right now that animals have rights as well as humans. What I don't understand though is why they treat the panda with such respect, quite rightly I have to say, but not other animals.
Kind regards.
Amanda
PS I will not be eating chinese food any more.

How ironic that people can get so upset by the voyeuristic killing of one animal by another questioning the civilization of the Chinese while our own government goes into Iraq and kills hundreds of thousands of people.... And what do we the people do? We re-elect them. Perhaps people need to get their priorities straight.

The story about animal abuse in China has so distressed me that I have today cancelled my planned trip to China for September. I hope that animals lovers planning to go to China for the 2008 Olympics will make their voices heard against such barbaric cruelty. Beijing shame on you.

I was in China two years ago and the people there and the Government believe that due to being awarded the Olympics they have been forgiven for all their human and animal rights abuses. I really did like it when I was there but there is so much policy I am totally against.
Posted by: Declan, Dublin 22 May 2007 14:32:39
The Chinese zoos are an absolute disgrace.
Every country should boycott the Olympic games, it's nothing short of barbaric and I cannot believe that this sort of cruelty is enjoyed and permitted in this day and age.
I am sickened by what I saw - poor defenceless animals being eaten alive - they should be ashamed of themselves.
Something must be done to stop this.

I was disgusted and appalled at the images Sky has broadcast to expose what is going on in Chinese Zoos. It is barbaric and has no place whatsoever in our Society. Those who work in the zoo and those to visit the zoo have no right to call themselves part of the human race. This world is doomed as long as China continues to wreck our planet - by their total lack of regard and respect for the environment and the wonderful animals that inhabit it.
I would love to throw the keepers into the tiger pen and see then if the creatures on the bus laugh. Absolutely outrageous. The poor bear made to drag the car is nothing short of torture. These people should be tried in a Court for what they are doing.
PLEASE, PLEASE, start an online petition or something to stop these horrendous acts. I am going to write to the Ambassador today to express my total disgust at the what the Chinese are doing.

Whilst the Chinese zoo issue is appalling, are these abuses any different to Bull Fighting seen regularly in parts of Europe?
Posted by: Tony Carter 22 May 2007 14:28:19
I cannot comprehend how the visitors to the China Zoo can bear to watch live animals thrown to carnivores to eat alive. I was physically sick to see and hear them howling as they were torn apart.
This is barbaric and not a spectacle to show to children as amusement.
Don't the Chinese realise that the days of the coliseum are over?
Posted by: Marija, Malta 22 May 2007 14:27:15
They don't respect human rights, is it any wonder that animal
rights are not respected?
What really angers me is the way the West prostitues itself to them.
What would happen to their economic boom if we stopped bending
over backwards to buy from them? And how about boycotting the
Olympics? When there's money involved, anything goes.

Dear Sky News,
I just thought id drop you an e-mail to say that the video showing animal abuse in China was utterly horrific.
I'm not easily shocked but that was very disturbing.
I'm glad that you have put it on your website as everyone needs to see the barbaric nature of these "zoos".
Well done.

Posted by: Rose, Ireland 22 May 2007 14:19:06
Thank you Sky News for exposing the real horror and cruelty in Chinese zoos. Sadly this is the tip of the iceberg. If you went deeper you would find a society that allows thousands of beautiful moon bears farmed in tiny cages whilst bile is so painfully extracted and also the skinning of cats and dogs alive. Hopefully it will put people off visiting China for the Olympic Games.

Hello it's hard to believe that people can be so stupid that they treat innocent animals the way these animals are being treated. It`s like a throwback in the development of humanity. To see laughing idiots inflicting senseless cruelty on the entire world in this fashion is totally beyond belief. Thank God for the people who fight every day to try make the world a better place for God`s defenceless creatures, maybe some day humanity will wake up. CHINA SHOULD HANG ITS HEAD IN SHAME.
Here's hoping for a kinder world.

The Chinese treatment of Animals in their zoos is a complete disgrace. They are still obviously a barbaric nation and we should limit our contact with such a country until they are able to show that human rights and animal rights exist.
To think this is entertaining people is upsetting. Disgusting.

I am so angry seeing live cattle fed to the tigers and the glee on the tourists faces that I could spit nails. If I had my way I would say: right tourists, on your ticket you have a number and if it is drawn then you are the lucky one down the ramp. Then we will see how many turn up for the slaughter.

I have never in all my life seen anything so barbaric as to what is happening to these animals. Is anything being done about it at all? Surely in this day and age there must be something done to save watching these outrageous shows.

I was absolutely disgusted at the shocking images of live animals being fed to the tigers. It made me physically sick to watch. Why has nothing been done about this? How can anyone possibly enjoy watching this? I think the people that pay to see something so evil and twisted should be fed to the tigers themselves! Do they not have anything better to spend thier money on?
Can the zoo not just have a collection box if they need to raise money for the park, surely they would get more money as they wouldn't have to buy the animals to feed to the tigers.
Have they got nothing better to spend their money on? If why not give some to charity for people who really need it - like children who are dying from thirst and starvation!

I have just watched your report on Chinese Zoos. Yes it is terrible what the Chinese are doing in their zoos and people say something should be done. I have just seen Peter Sharp's extremely disturbing report on animal cruelty in China.
I was absolutely horrified at the spectacle of feeding live animals to a group of tigers, the appalling treatment of animals for the sake of entertainment (performing bears) and the distressing sight of bored and psychotic animals imprisoned at a zoo.
What was even more upsetting for me was to see the enjoyment on the faces of the onlookers, some as young as 4 years of age. I find it hard to see what enjoyment people get out of seeing a cow taking 20 minutes to die in the most horrific way possible.
Something must be done to publicise the true barbarity of the Chinese culture, this is one of many breaches of not only animal rights but also human rights.
This country hosts the next Summer Olympic Games and will no doubt paint a very glossy picture of life in China and the culture they lead. With reports similar to Peter Sharp's, I hope the true story of this disturbing and barbaric country is publicised to the full.

I was absolutely horrified to see the sickening video of a live cow and chickens being fed to tigers in China. These tigers have been raised in captivity and have no idea how to make a clean kill and one can only imagine the terror and agony that these poor cows go through. What is even more terrible is that this sick population take their young children to watch this spectacle. I would like to see everyone who cares about animals to boycott TV and other coverage of the Olympic Games in China. In fact, why did they ever get the Games in the first place as they are barbarians?

Having seen this morning's story regarding the feeding of live domestic animals to tigers, I feel that the wider picture should be brought to your audience's attention, namely that not only chickens and cattle are fed to big cats for entertainment but also live dogs. These dogs are also bred for food and fur and are kept in conditions that would make anyone with a soul cry out in disgust. Please continue to show graphic images of this nature to bring the plight of these animals to the world's attention.
Posted by: Concerned of Croydon 22 May 2007 13:23:56
I was horrified to see your report from China. The prolonged terror and suffering of the domestic animals being fed alive to the tigers was unbearable to watch. Even worse was the enjoyment and delight of the spectators and their children. What does this say about the Chinese? Where is their compassion for the poor animals unnecessarily suffering? This barbaric practice MUST be stopped. I think the Olympic games should be boycotted by the international community - that would draw the Chinese authorities' attention to how inhumane their actions are regarded internationally and it might provoke an attempt to end this appalling practice.
Thank you for bringing this horror to public attention. What can viewers do to register their protest to the Chinese government?

The size may be different but, correct me if I'm wrong, is this not the exact same thing that happens at a foxhunt when the dogs tear a fox to pieces?

Posted by: Denise Kenny, Dublin 22 May 2007 13:17:38
Knowing how bad their record is on human rights, it comes as no surprise that their treatment of animals comes to this. The Olympic games should not have been awarded to China in the first place and the Olympic community should come together and boycott them in protest. The west is scared of offending the Chinese government due to their increasing power and so I am afraid nothing will change, only deteriorate. The poor and the animals have no voice and will never have protection in China.

As a committee member of a group called Ladies Who Lunch to raise money for our sanctuary for cats and dogs, I was horrified to watch the news this morning regarding the treatment, practice of feeding live animals to tigers in China. If this is not barbaric and unacceptable to those watching, especially young children, then I don't know what is!!
We here work hard to ensure the care of abandoned and unwanted animals and raise money while we have fun. What can be the fun for those people watching such horrific treatment.?

I have been watching your news and I am horribly shocked at the abuse on animals at the Chinese zoos.
As I am typing, I cannot stop shaking after witnessing those pictures.
China is very well known for animal abuse and is abusing many more animals than the ones held in zoos.
These abuses should not be allowed and it is about time that our governments take action.
In the meantime, please keep me informed of any organisations that might/will undertake action against those zoos as I will strongly support them.

I have just seen your report about the inhumane treatment of animals in China. Isn't it about time the civilised world stopped being so politically correct and denounced this regime for what it is - barbaric and uncivilised. Instead of speaking out, we reward them with the next Olympics. This was purely to appease this disgusting regime (and indeed its citizens who cheer at the cruelty in its zoos) to ensure that China would trade with the west. Is the dollar so important to governments now that we allow all decency and morality to go out of the window? The trade being sought is cheap labour, often by children, to sell goods at inflated prices to overfed westerners (and I include myself in this) who, although aware of the zoos, the "dying rooms", forced labour camps etc, try and convince ourselves it will get better if we buy their goods. Where are all the interfering goody-goodies when we need them? Of course, they are busy trying to stop people enjoying a cigarette! Shame on all of us for our resigned silence.

In all my born days, I have never, ever, ever seen anything so horrific as what I have just witnessed on your Sky News about the Chinese and how they treat animals in their zoos. It is torturous and humiliating and what they do with the tigers is barbaric. How can this possibly be allowed. I live in South Africa and have been to many game parks and zoos and have never seen anything quite like this. There is nothing wrong with wildlife catching and killing its prey when it is hungry - that is only natural - BUT what the Chinese people are doing with live animals and the feeding of the tigers is even beyond barbaric and the people who are actually watching from the safety of their bus are not much better themselves.
I hope and pray that the animal activists are able to do something about this situation before it goes any further.
From a person with a huge pain in her heart after watching your news clip.
Also do you HAVE TO KEEP RUNNING this news clip over and over again.... it is horrific.

Sadly the tigers are doing what comes naturally to them and it is not that which hurts, it is the way humans intervene and decide that these animal will die and in such a terrible way. Do the Chinese think they have that right to kill these animals?
As much as I was upset to see these terrible images - I am very thankful to Sky News for exposing this cruelty to the world and I hope that Sky News does "everything" in its power to bring this subject to the Chinese and world governments' attentions to try and attempt to stop this from happening for much longer.

I feel I had to put my views forward - I have just seen the footage of the live animals being fed to a pack of tigers in a wildlife park, watched or spectated by people who seem to think it's entertainment! I have never seen anything so sickening, hideous, just grotesque in my life.
What do the Chinese people expect the rest of the world to think of them - what sort of people are they?
Thank you Sky News for bringing this to our attention - it clearly wasn't easy watching, in fact I couldn't watch, but in order for something to be done about it, people of the world need to know what's going on in China.
It is just simply outrageous, I couldn't believe what I was watching.
Do you know if there is a website I can contact ie, Chinese government website.
